Erb’s Palsy

Erb’s palsy is closely related to a condition called shoulder dystocia. Shoulder dystocia occurs when a baby’s shoulder becomes caught behind the mother’s pubic bone. In an effort to deliver the shoulder, the doctor may use a vacuum, forceps, or excessive force which can result in nerve damage in the shoulder area, causing Erb’s palsy.

Large babies, overweight mothers and a breech birth increase the chance of shoulder dystocia. In most cases, Erb’s palsy can be avoided. With appropriate fetal monitoring and the regulation of blood sugar during pregnancy, the risks of shoulder dystocia may be decreased.

Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy is a common birth injury that affects thousands of babies each year. It may be caused by a head injury, infection, or lack of oxygen to the baby’s brain. An obstetrician’s carelessness or failure to take the necessary precautions following a difficult pregnancy may result in cerebral palsy. This condition presents a lifetime of challenges to the child such as developmental issues and difficulties with motor skills.

Cerebral palsy is not always immediately evident. Symptoms may reveal themselves within the first year of your child’s life. The potential indications include:

  • Poor coordination
  • Stiff muscles
  • Unusual posture
  • Delayed crawling
